Functional test AeroSleep by Custom 8

Custom8 is a Belgian spin-off of KULeuven University that specialises in testing bed products. For AeroSleep they simulated the breathing resistance a baby would experience when sleeping with its nose pressed against our mattress protector. Moreover, this test was performed under different circumstances:

  • with and without AeroSleep fitted sheet
  • under wet and dry conditions

As a reference value for the comparison it was opted for a standard mattress with a cotton fitted sheet and no mattress protector. This involves a breathing resistance of 100% i.e. the baby cannot breathe properly with its nose pressed against the mattress.

Results

  • The combination of an AeroSleep mattress protector and an AeroSleep fitted sheet produced the best score in terms of air permeability, both in dry (breathing resistance 10% vs 100%) and wet conditions (breathing resistance 14% vs 600%).
  • With a resistance of 37% the combination of an AeroSleep mattress protector with a dry cotton fitted sheet still does markedly better than the standard mattress with a cotton fitted sheet although resistance is 27% higher than with the AeroSleep combination.
  • The reference value (standard mattress + cotton fitted sheet) is 6 times less air permeable in wet conditions (from 100 to 600%).
  • As is the case with the AeroSleep combo, the combination of an AeroSleep mattress protector with a wet cotton fitted sheet does a lot better on the air permeability test than the reference value in wet conditions (47 vs 600%).

How is this possible?

The AeroSleep mattress protector has a specially designed 3D structure that ensures your little one can continue to breathe easily, even with its nose fully pressed up against it. Our fitted sheets are made of a non-absorbing, perforated fabric that does not affect the air permeability of the mattress protector. Since cotton absorbs moisture and is not perforated, this does have a negative impact on the normal functioning of the AeroSleep mattress protector.
